CATHERINE BREILLAT, FRANCE’S ENFANT TERRIBLE OF
EROTIC, FEMALE-CENTRIC CINEMA, is known for
pushing the envelope as often as she pushes her
viewers’ buttons. Her voyeuristic drama, FAT GIRL,
centers around a beautiful teenager’s seduction
(Roxane Mesquida, resembling a young Brooke
Shields). SEX IS COMEDY is cinema à clef, a semiautobiographical
account of Breillat’s shooting of
that film’s pivotal sex scene. Mesquida reprises her
role and Grégoire Colin plays her seducer. Anne
Parillaud embodies the harried director who cajoles
and berates her young talent into giving naturalistic
performances entirely in the nude — Colin
encumbered by a huge plastic prosthetic penis.
Funny, embarrassing, full of ridiculous moments that
ring strangely true, SEX IS COMEDY manages to
explore how sexuality is brought to life in the cinema
through any means necessary.
