A FUNNY, MOVING FILM ABOUT AN ENTIRE NATION THAT WON’T PAY ITS ELECTRIC BILLS? Paul Devlin’s POWER TRIP gives new meaning to the phrase dark comedy. Georgia, a former republic of the Soviet Union and now an independent nation, is in the words of one journalist, “a basket case.” In the old days electric power was free. Today AES Corp., a U.S. company that is the largest owner of power in the world, owns Georgia’s power supply. Flimsy, self-installed wires crisscross every building in Dr. Seussian fashion, as residents steal electricity because they can’t afford a $24/month utility bill. Then the army and airport get behind on their bills and AES turns the juice off on them! Devlin’s film manages to have compassion for both sides: Georgia’s beleaguered citizens and the corporation that’s trying to get paid for providing a vital service.
